The lack of file type support is disappointing, and I couldn’t even find a way to “close” the file. By this point in my investigation, I totally lost interest in this tool. There are some zooming, panning and orbiting tools, and tools for exploding assemblies and collaborating with others, but that’s it. So, I selected an Inventor Part file (.ipt) to open and I have pasted an image of what you’ll see, below. I’m sure that support will be coming for these formats, but I would think these would have been included in the initial release! I’m sure there are plenty of other formats missing, but, we’ll just have to wait and see how many and when these other formats get added. Not only that, neither are Inventor drawings (.idw), Inventor Presentation (.ipn) files, or even Revit Family files (.rfa).

To my dismay, I discovered that Inventor assembly files are not supported. Well, I went ahead and browsed for an assembly file, eager to view it and see what capabilities and features this viewer has. In the Open dialog you are not able to discover what file types the viewer is capable of viewing. Exciting, right? I immediately clicked on the “Browse for a file to upload” button and went straight for an Inventor assembly file.

Since this is an online viewer, there’s no software to download and install, and you don’t even need to log In to A360. It currently accepts over 50 file formats, including AutoCAD, Revit and Inventor files. I quickly jumped onto the site to test it out. Autodesk has released the A360 File Viewer, and at first I thought it was hot.
